Shiroyama Park

Shiroyama Park is located close to the center of Kagoshima city, on the slopes of Mount Shiroyama. Famous for its historical significance as the site of the Satsuma Rebellion’s final battle, it also provides one of the best views of the city’s active volcano, Sakurajima.

With an elevation of just 107 meters, Shiroyama Park offers pleasant walking trails that are suitable for all levels of fitness. These will lead you around the grounds and up to one of the highlights of the park: the observation deck. From here, you can get spectacular views out over Kagoshima city, Kagoshima Bay, and of course, Sakurajima. It’s the perfect place to get that brilliant shot of this iconic landmark!

The night view is also very popular, with the city lights twinkling beneath you and the silhouette of Sakurajima looming behind them. Before you head back down, check out the small gift shop for local souvenirs, and keep an eye out for the resident cats as you browse!

Visitors with an interest in Japanese history should look out for Saigo Cave on their way back from the observation point. It’s named after Saigo Takamori, a local hero who led the Satsuma Rebellion against the Meiji government in 1877. This unassuming spot is said to be where he made his last stand.

Nearby attractions

Shiroyama Park’s close proximity to the city center makes it a convenient stop on a day of sightseeing. While you’re in the area, you may also want to visit the Reimeikan Museum, situated at the base of Mt Shiroyama. Built in the ruins of Tsurumaru Castle, it’s dedicated to the culture and history of Kagoshima prefecture. Kagoshima City Museum of Art is also within a 10-minute walk of the park.
