Warm up with a hot drink after a day of skiing in Niseko.]]>

  • This bar is located in Niseko which is one of our Top 10 Japan Travel Destinations for 2020!
The little house buried up to its eaves in the snow is easy to miss when walking the chilly streets of Hirafu in Hokkaido. Look a little closer at the sticker-plastered vending machine front that’s been fashioned into a door, and you might be tempted to duck inside.

Do so and you’ll be rewarded with a warm drink and soft jazz tunes at Bar Gyu+.

A reprieve from Niseko’s ski slopes

The interior of Bar Gyu+ is wooden and cozy. It’s the perfect place to relax after a day of skiing on Niseko’s world-famous slopes. Hirafu, where the bar is located, is the biggest village in the Niseko ski area.

Flickering candles create a warm atmosphere, and windows frame a pretty picture of a frozen world that’s much more pleasant to look at from inside while clutching a hot drink. Take your pick from hot toddies to signature seven-spice hot wine, or just good old fashioned whiskey.

The lovely couple who run the bar began collecting Japanese whiskey more than 10 years ago. They’ve since built up quite the selection of rare spirits. Though cocktails are the main, you’ll also find craft beers and mocktails, as well as snacks like Hokkaido cheese plates.

Once you’ve had a few drinks, check out the carefully-curated record collection. It has plenty of jazz classics to lend a cool, down to earth atmosphere. Upstairs, large speakers fill the room with top-notch sound.

Hisashi, the husband of the owner duo, reinforced the exterior with straw bale construction for insulation from cold and noise, giving the bar its bunker-like look. The curious door came about when a friend randomly gave him a Coca-Cola vending machine. Now it’s one of the most photographed spots in Niseko.

The humble beginnings of Bar Gyu+

The bar has been around since 1999, making it one of the oldest bars in town. Hisashi opened it when he was just 24-years-old. He built his home in a tiny lot facing a beautiful forest but soon ran out of money which he needed to complete the bar.

Photo by: Bar Gyu+ Party like it’s 1999.

With no other options, he laid a slab of wood down as the counter in his living room and opened for business right there. In 2005, he met his wife Morelli while skiing, and they’ve been running the bar together ever since.

Today, Niseko is rapidly changing and continues to garner attention around the world for its highly-sought-after powder snow, but Bar Gyu+ remains an authentic staple.

Need some food to soak up all that whiskey? Check our list of Famous Foods in Hokkaido to find out what to eat on your trip.

Dance The Year Away

The year 2019 brought many new things to Japan, including sexy McDonald’s cups, the abdication of an emperor, and a subsequent new era in the Japanese calendar called Reiwa. All good things must come to an end, though, and we’re stoked to see what 2020 brings. Several nightclubs, theme parks, and bars in big cities like Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya are throwing countdown parties, as always. Toast to new beginnings (or the same old bad habits) at the New Year’s celebrations below.

Yokohama is for (beer) lovers.]]>

Wanna eat your way through a ramen museum and dance with Pikachu? How about guzzling down local and imported craft beer? Yokohama, Japan’s second-largest city, is the place to do it.

We are huge fans of this port-side metropolis that’s only a 35-minute train ride from central Tokyo. It’s as artsy and funky as Tokyo’s Daikanyama neighborhood but without all the crowds and pretentiousness.

Here’s our list of the best foreigner-friendly hangouts in Yokohama that have popped up on our weekend (who are we kidding, sometimes nightly) drinking rotation.

Thrash Zone Meatballs

metal bar japan

Photo by: kthk_iyo Metal and beer will never lead you astray.

Beer lovers are generally horrified to see the price of beer in Japan—shelling out ¥1000 yen a glass isn’t fun. That isn’t the case at Thrash Zone Meatballs, though. The price is low, the beer is delicious and the meatballs, you’ve got to try them.

The original flavor is fantastic, but check their Instagram for monthly specials (we still have delicious dreams about that Argentine Chimichurri flavor). They have another location near Yokohama Station with no meatballs if you just want to get straight to the beer. Plus they only play heavy metal, a welcome escape from J-pop.

  • Hours: Tuesday to Friday 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Closed Mondays
  • Cover charge: Free!
  • Average drink price: ¥800

Cocco Torinichi

Even if you live in Japan and have picked up some of the language, the thought of entering an izakaya (Japanese-style pub) can be daunting. You’ve studied up on restaurant lingo, but one unknown word throws you off and you end up ordering some weird alcoholic tea instead of a whiskey.

Cocco Torinichi offers the unique Japanese standing bar experience with friendly staff, who enjoy talking to foreigners. The house sake is particularly palatable and gets the conversation flowing right in the center of Noge, Yokohama’s jazzy drinking neighborhood. Do not leave without trying their fried chicken!

Gimme Gimme Gimme

Gimmie Gimmie Gimmie Bar in Yokohama Japan

Photo by: Gimmie Gimmie Gimmie Gimmie a drank asap.

Sometimes (all the time) we just need a cheap drink, and lord knows drinking in Japan isn’t the pastime to save money. Gimme Gimme Gimme offers a less exorbitant way to consume alcohol with their ¥500 drinks. Yes, everything is ¥500! The low price point has made it a sort of hub for expats who aren’t trying to go broke drinking every night on an English teacher’s salary. The loud dubstep and house music can be jarring at first, but once you’ve had a few drinks, you’ll come to appreciate it.

  • Hours: 7 p.m. to 4 a.m.
  • Cover charge: Free, but you are required to order more than one drink
  • Average drink price: ¥500

You don’t need to break the bank either, as the prices aren’t horrid despite the beer being imported from across the globe. There’s a second branch in Yokohama Station, but the original in Kannai has a veranda. Who doesn’t like drinking on a veranda? They host regular events too, including live music, trivia nights, and sports game watch parties.

Grassroots

One of our favorite places for date night. A night at Grassroots will give you a peek into Japan’s alternative scene in a western-style cocktail bar. Time your visit during one of their regular art shows, wild live painting events, or live music gigs.

5 Metal and Punk Bars in Japan https://travel.gaijinpot.com/japan-sightseeing-essentials/metal-bars-japan/ Sun, 20 Oct 2019 02:00:51 +0000 https://travel.gaijinpot.com/?page_id=13503

Enjoy heavy metal, punk and horror movie memorabilia at these fine establishments.]]>

Whether your thing is dressing up like a wolf or fawning over J-pop Idols, Japan caters to even the most niche subcultures —  including heavy metal and punk. No one can argue Japan’s profound contribution to metal and punk music from Disclose to Sabbat to X-Japan, bands loved by metalheads and non-metalheads alike. For those of us who enjoy the finer things in life like getting drunk in a dank basement to disgusting music, these bars afford the perfect opportunity.

1. GODZ (Shinjuku)

This dimly-lit basement dwelling has a music collection vast enough to accommodate requests spanning from heavy metal classics like Judas Priest to death metal staples like Morbid Angel. When Mayhem played in Tokyo, this is where band members partied after. Being that GODZ is located in Kabukicho—your one stop shop for debauchery— we imagine they did much more than just drink here. Within a few miles’ radius, you can enjoy getting drunk while listening to metal, watching a dancing robot and laser show, losing at Pachinko, or potentially getting scouted to work at a host bar if you’re a foreign woman. The staff can speak English and are more than welcoming to foreigners.

  • Who will love it: Death Metal, Heavy Metal, Black Metal, and Thrash Metal enthusiasts
  • Map
  • Nearest Station: Shinjuku Station (it's a five-minute walk from the East exit)
  • Open daily from 7 p.m. until 5 a.m. May be closed if they have a special event or afterparty for touring bands only.
  • http://www.metal-godz.com/access.html (Japanese)

2. Bar Konton (Osaka)

A tiny slice of hell on earth with records and gig flyers covering the walls. It’s directly across the hall —literally two steps away— from the record shop Punk and Destroy. There are only about 10 seats or less in the whole place, reserved for heavy drinkers only. If you’ve just found some gems from the record shop next door, the guy behind the bar may be willing to throw them on for you if you ask nicely, as long as it’s legit punk and not some trash garbage.

3. KOBA Bar (Hiroshima)

Koba Heavy Metal Bar HiroshimaPhoto by: Al Case

The owner and bartender, “BOM” Tsuyoshi, is an absolute hard rock and heavy metal maniac who loves drinking and singing until early morning with patrons. The space is intimate but has a few tables and cozy chairs for larger groups, as well. Language barriers don’t exist here, and you’ll feel like you are drinking at a friend’s house while jamming records and watching heavy metal videos projected on the wall.

Though KOBA technically closes at 2 a.m., BOM often keeps the place open as long as there are still patrons inside drinking and rocking. He’s also more than happy to cook up some small dishes if you need to soak up all the booze you’ve been drinking. They occasionally host events such as DJ nights.

4. SCUM (Nagoya)

metal bar japanPhoto by: scumrh

If you’re ever wandering around Sakae— Nagoya’s red-light district— with slightly more innocent intentions than hitting up a host bar or cabaret club, drop into SCUM. Geared more towards hard rock, and heavy metal basics like Iron Maiden and Motorhead, the best thing about SCUM is their variety of tequila.

The owner imports tequila from all over the world that you’d be hard pressed to find in other bars in the area. You can always catch a show at the nearby cabaret club Bond Girls if you’re feeling frisky and people are requesting lame songs.

  • Who will love it: Motorhead or Metallica fans, tequila lovers, the occasional pizza thrashers
  • Map
  • Nearest Station: Sakae station
  • Open from 8 p.m. to 5 p.m. Closed Sundays.

5. Thrash Zone (Yokohama)

metal bar japanPhoto by: kthk_iyo

Dudes who enjoy drinking slightly pricey craft beer, nerding out about IPAs or priding themselves on their beards will feel at home here. Thrash Zone features their own in-house brews made at their nearby nano-brewery. While the music selections can sometimes leave a lot to be desired, the brews give cheeky little nods to metal with such hit names as Morbid Red, Speed Kills IPA, and World Downfall Stout.

It’s tiny with bar seating and standing room only and can fill up quickly as it’s frequented by salarymen indulging in their daily post-work beer ritual. Sometimes there are free snacks, but If you want some grub with your beer go to Thrash Zone Meatballs instead which has the same Thrash Zone exclusive brews plus meatballs (if you couldn’t guess by the name).

  • Who will love it: Craft beer nerds who may have an interest in thrash metal

  • 6 p.m. to midnight Monday to Friday. 12:00 p.m. to midnight Saturday and Sunday. Thrash Zone Meatballs is open 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday to Friday and 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. on weekends. Closed Monday.

  • 2019 Dates: Main parade Oct. 27; Horror Movie Screenings Oct. 26
  • Parade: 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. After party until 10 p.m.
No mere mortal can resist the evil of the thriller that is Kawasaki’s Halloween celebration. This vivacious party is packed with horror-movie screenings, pole dancers, and Japan’s biggest Halloween parade.

Long before people started getting rowdy and flipping over cars in the streets of Shibuya for Halloween, Kawasaki was the place to party. This humble city in Kanagawa Prefecture has been hosting its annual Halloween parade since the late ‘90s and over 100,000 people gathered to watch in 2018.

From the creative to the absolutely terrifying, the costumes get better and better every year. Hop on the train for about 30 minutes from Shibuya, and you’re ready to get spooky.

The parade

Usually held on the last Sunday in October, the Kawasaki Halloween Parade takes place around Kawasaki Station and the La Cittadella shopping area. Participants go all out, and for good reason—the best costume gets a ¥500,000 prize!

The parade culminates in a free after party at La Cittadella where live DJs play tunes into the night amidst pole dancers and drag queens strutting their stuff on stage. The 2019 event also features a scary boat cruise from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Register in advance if you want to join the parade, or simply line up along the street to watch. There’s prime seating available for ¥3,000, but it’s not necessary to enjoy the spectacle. If you do decide to participate, note that registration is limited to only 2,000 people, so you’d better sign up fast.

Horror movies, face painting and more

If you’re not into parades and dance parties—though we’re not sure why you wouldn’t be—Kawasaki’s Halloween celebration includes horror movie screenings and family-friendly events too.

Catch the all-night horror movie marathon including classics like Hellraiser and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre on Oct. 26 from 7 p.m. until around 2 a.m. the next morning!

For old school horror enthusiasts, Claudio Simonetti’s Goblin will be performing soundtracks of Dario Argento’s classics Suspiria and Tenebre synchronized to screenings of the films on Oct. 25 and 26 as well.

The kiddies can enjoy face painting, a bouncy house, and a family Halloween runway.

Since the semi-final match of the 2019 Rugby World Cup will be taking place in nearby Yokohama on the same night of the parade, many bars and restaurants in the area will be showing the game on big-screen TVs. Check the Kawasaki Halloween official website for a full schedule of events, including a list of which establishments will be showing the RWC games!

See the parade in the afternoon and then dance the night away surrounded by creatures of the dark. We hope you’ve got the soul for getting down.

You know you're in Japan when...]]>

Nothing quite screams Hollywood-does-Japan like Shibuya. Commuters clambering across Shibuya’s Scramble Crossing underneath the two larger-than-life HD screens (all very Lost In Translation) are a sure sign that yes, you are definitely in Tokyo now.

Shibuya Crossing in Tokyo, Japan

The traffic lights at Shibuya’s Scramble Crossing change every two minutes to maintain the enormous flow of people and vehicles.

It’s pop-culture credentials don’t just cease there, Shibuya is the pulsating core of some of Japan’s most internationally renowned districts. Teenagers, couples and families can be spotted picnicking in the shade of nearby Yoyogi Park. Students decked out in the latest fashion trend file out of adjacent Harajuku. The older (and richer) make a quick getaway to the posh malls of Omotesando Avenue and healing calm of Meiji-jingu.

Rockabillly Gang Men Jeans Twist Dance Yoyogi Park

Shibuya is just a short walk from Yoyogi Park and Harajuku.

Park yourself outside the Hachiko Exit (named after the famously loyal Shiba-Inu that always met his owner at the station after work) on a Friday or Saturday night and you’re sure to witness the sheer power of Japan’s vibrant youth culture.

Partying in Shibuya

It used to be that Shibuya was the place to party on Halloween in Tokyo. Just grab a couple of cans from a nearby convenience store and revel in crowds of over 1 million people getting absolutely hammered in the street. Yes, in the street.

Shibuya Halloween in Tokyo Japan

Seems like Jason has made some new friends.

Sadly, all good things come to an end—street drinking in Shibuya during Halloween has been banned since someone flipped over a truck and numerous fights broke out amidst the chaos in 2018. This is literally why we can’t have nice things.

If you end up finding love, there’s always Love Hotel Hill for all your lovin’ needs.

If hitting the club scene sounds like your jam though, the most youthful of Tokyo’s wards certainly has a nightlife to write home (or just y’know, a Twitter status) about. The giant disco ball in the center of Womb’s main dance floor coupled with the huge, multi-floored VISION are only two reasons why you could end up having your best night out evaaaa in Shibuya. If you end up finding love, there’s always Love Hotel Hill for all your lovin’ needs.

Two high school girls, single men, single women, are standing at a meeting point at Hachiko.

The Hachiko meeting point is the busiest in the city but somehow people always manage to find each other. Look out for the dog statue opposite the green tourist information bus.

Shibuya’s laid back side

As vigorous as Shibuya can be, there is an array of more laid-back food, sports and art culture well suited for any age or persuasion. Baseball and rugby enthusiasts will be overjoyed by the offerings from the Meiji Jingu and Chichibuomiya Rugby Stadiums.

Cultural hotspots such as the Bunkamura (a museum with outstanding art exhibitions), the New National Theatre Tokyo (or NNTT) or Konno Hachimangu Shrine (once home to the illustrious Shibuya family) will broaden the scope of your itinerary.

Coffee time in rush hour of Tokyo with a blur of people Scrarmble Crossing , Tokyo, Japan

Grab a coffee at the Hachiko Starbucks overlooking Scramble Crossing.

Likewise, foodies will be able to gorge themselves on some of the most varied and delicious cuisine in Japan. For vegans, Nagi Shokudo combines seriously delicious food with fantastic magazines and reading material in English or Japanese.

For film freaks, make a pilgrimage to Gonpachi, the restaurant from Kill Bill. As the base of the hip and trendy, there are also coffee shops galore including the famous Starbucks whose second floor looks out over the world’s busiest crossing.

One thing’s for sure: you could stay in Shibuya for your entire stay and never, ever get bored.

Non-stop drinks in Tokyo's love hotel district, LGBT neighborhood, and video game paradise.]]>
Albatross G in Golden Gai, Shinjuku is a foreigner-friendly bar in Tokyo.

Spend a weekend in Tokyo, and you’ll realize it’s a city that really likes to drink and party. The city is practically overflowing with after-hour hangouts catering to all tastes, and we do mean all.

Whether you’re looking to rub shoulders with friendly locals, dance to disco in the city’s vibrant LGBT district or get geeky at a gamer bar, you’ll find just what you’re after.

Tokyo has almost too many options to choose from though, and wandering into just any back-alley joint can be a bit scary if you’ve got limited Japanese skills. Here are 10 of the coolest foreigner-friendly bars in Tokyo where anyone can enjoy a drink until their last train—or later.

Beat Cafe

Tucked deep in the love hotel district of Shibuya‘s Dogenzaka sits basement bar Beat Cafe. This cozy, cavernous hangout has long been known as a favorite among international residents, Tokyo-born locals and those just passing through.

There’s no novelty here; it’s just a well-worn dive bar with reasonably-priced drinks, a love for indie rock and extended opening hours. If you’re looking for somewhere laid back to start your night, or a place to wind down after visiting one of Shibuya’s larger clubs, Beat Cafe is always there and the crowd is always friendly.

  • Hours: 8 p.m. to late (sometimes until 7 a.m. depending on how busy it is)
  • Cover charge: Free
  • Average drink price: ¥600 to ¥700
  • 150-0043 Tokyo, Shibuya City, Dogenzaka, 2 Chome−13−5 - Map
  • https://www.facebook.com/beatcafe

Ginza 300 Bar

While the clientele at Ginza’s 300 Bar is usually a 50/50 split between nearby office workers looking for a cheap drink and international patrons, its focus is very much international. The bar, where patrons drink while standing rather than sitting, is known for serving impressive cocktails for the bargain price of ¥300.

If you’re overwhelmed by choice, go for their mojito which was awarded “Japan’s Best Mojito” by the Cuban Embassy in Japan. A little insider’s tip: get there early, between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. when they serve top-shelf spirits for ¥300 too.

  • Hours: 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. on weekdays, 2 p.m. to 2 a.m. on weekends
  • Cover charge: Free
  • Average drink price: ¥300

Berry’s at Just Another Space

It’s hard to find a lot of information about Berry’s, but that’s part of its charm. This hidden bar in Nakameguro is popular with Tokyo’s international crowd, but it’s not a tourist location. It’s a place that most people are introduced to through friends, which is why you’ll notice the vibe feels more like a house party than a typical bar.

It’s located on the third floor of the studio rental warehouse Just Another Space. Head there on a Saturday. The party usually kicks off around 10 p.m. and the drink prices are standard—about ¥700 for a bottle of Sapporo beer— but the table tennis is free!

  • Hours: 9 p.m. to late on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday
  • Cover charge: Free
  • Average drink price: ¥700 to ¥900

New Sazae

New Sazae Disco bar in Shinjuku Ni-chome

Groovy.

This secretive disco bar located on the second floor of a nondescript building in Shinjuku Ni-chome is the oldest in the area having opened back in 1966. Here it’s all about disco, dancing, and making new friends from all walks of life.

Ni-chome, the gay neighborhood of Shinjuku, is one of the most culturally diverse districts in the city so you’ll find a cross-section of folks here, LGBT or otherwise. If there’s one particular bar in this rowdy neighborhood you have to add to your itinerary, it’s New Sazae.

  • Hours: 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. Fri and Sat
  • Cover charge: ¥1000 (includes one drink)
  • Average drink price: ¥800
  • 160-0022 Tokyo, Shinjuku City, Shinjuku, 2 Chome−18−5 - Map

Bar Ghetto

If you want a cozy, local Japanese bar experience that still has a level of international familiarity, then pop by Bar Ghetto—a laid back joint tucked behind Shimokitazawa’s Suzunari theatre. The bar is dingy, and there’s only space for about 10 people, but the intimacy makes it a great place to get to know the locals who float through.

The bartender speaks English, and the drink selection covers all the standards. It’s become a popular place for local expats to hang out, so if you want some tips on places to visit, chances are you’ll be able to gather some insider knowledge here.

Aoyama Tunnel

The underground venue Aoyama Tunnel is for dance music fans, and late-night party animals. Open from 8 p.m. until 10 a.m. five days a week, the venue’s main focus is house and techno, with DJs playing vinyl records all night long.

In terms of staff and clientele, the patrons are pretty mixed, but it’s very popular with more European crowds. Cocktails are always reasonable, and most of the staff do speak a bit of English, so if you’re after something a little more niche drink-wise you shouldn’t have too much trouble ordering it.

  • Hours: 8 p.m. to 10 a.m. Tues to Sun
  • Cover charge: Usually ¥1000 (includes one drink)
  • Average drink price: ¥500 to ¥1000
  • 150-0002 Tokyo, Setagaya City, Kitazawa, 1 Chome-45-16 - Map

Good Beer Faucets

Craft beer is still a relatively new concept in Japan, even though it’s a staple in many Western countries. Shibuya’s Good Beer Faucets is one craft beer hangout in Tokyo and is naturally super popular with international crowds.

The casual dining and drinking venue has 40 different types of Japanese craft beer on tap, and the lineup changes daily, so even regulars will always have something new to try.

  • Hours: 4 p.m. to 12 a.m. Mon to Thurs; 4 p.m. to 1 a.m. Fri; 3 p.m. to 12 a.m. Sat; 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. Sun
  • Cover charge: Free
  • Average drink price: ¥600 to ¥1600

Albatross G

One of the biggest barriers to enjoying Japan’s nightlife for foreign folks is trying to navigate which bars welcome Japanese patrons only and which ones are happy to have transient clientele. Yes, discrimination is totally a (legal) thing in Japan.

Albatross G, hidden within the labyrinth of the wild red-light district Kabukicho, is the latter. For a ¥500 entrance charge, you can pull up a seat between the chandeliers at this compact double-story bar and drink world-class cocktails among the Kabukicho madness until the sun comes up.

  • Hours 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. daily

Ruby Room

Rugby Room Bar in Shibuya Tokyo

Ruby Room is a failsafe hangout in the middle of Shibuya’s nightlife chaos. This live-music centric bar hosts a rotating roster of events all week long, most of which are foreign-run. The bar itself is rather no-frills, but the drinks are around ¥600, the music is good, and the vibe is always inclusive, what more do you need?

  • Hours: 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. daily
  • Coverage charge: Free unless there's a live show
  • Average drink price: ¥500 to ¥700

8bit Cafe

Embrace your inner otaku at 8bit cafe. Hidden on the fifth floor of a rather ramshackle looking building in Shinjuku, this retro game bar is covered from table to ceiling in gaming paraphernalia, but that’s just where the gaming obsession begins.

8bit Cafe Shinjuku

8bit is a great place to spend the night if you’ve missed your last train (or even if you haven’t).

There are  Super Nintendos to play for a fee, and themed drinks like the “Dr. Mario” and “Princess Peach’s Temptation.” We couldn’t have a list of bars in Tokyo, without including just a bit of video game nerdom could we?

While it’s easy to get sucked into the tourist traps of overpopulated cities like Tokyo and Kyoto, going out for a night on the town in Nagoya feels more authentic.
