Senjojiki Beach

Senjojiki Beach offers up stunning rock formations and tide pools, but don’t forget your usual beach supplies because it’s still a mecca for swimming and camping.

The beach is tucked away on Odosezaki Cape jutting into the Sea of Japan within the Senjojiki coastline. The 40-kilometer (28-mile) stretch of rugged yet elegant coast is a highlight of Aomori Prefecture. Senjojiki is a lesser-traversed destination, but even if you’re just en route on the JR East Gono Line, it’s worth a stop at this bedrock beach with a massive signature rock formation approximately 12 kilometers (about 3 miles) tall.

The scenery came from an earthquake that rocked the area more than 200 years ago. Boulders matched with delicate tide pools and emerald sea moss create the beauty you’ll experience in visiting this unique beach.

Beach season

However, the swimming season is short depending on the weather from year to year, usually beginning in July and lasting until mid-August. This quaint locale also boasts being selected as one of the “100 best sunsets in Japan,” so it is recommended to stick around for dinner and after evening hours.

For tourist information, hit up the Senjojiki center, just a three-minute walk from the station. If you wish to stay the night, there are a few small inns in the area, as well as camping facilities.

Aomori prefecture is most widely known for its popular Nebuta Matsuri, a summer festival showing of gigantic floats, as well as being destination studded with nature and a great place for apple picking in late August. If you’re visiting in beach season, you may want to time your journey around these events.
