Shippo

A home away from home for Osaka’s lesbian community.

Miles away from Osaka’s rambunctious Doyamacho, the city’s “gayborhood,”  is an unassuming, but incredibly welcoming LGBTQ bar called Shippo (styled SHIPPO).

In contrast to many of the city’s gay-friendly venues, Shippo, tucked away in Higashi-Osaka City’s Fuse district, embraces an ambience of relaxed fun which is comfortable for beginners and conducive to meeting new people. By focusing more on creating a safe space for conversation with or without alcohol (the owner doesn’t drink and encourages other non-drinkers to visit), Shippo has gained a reputation as one of the most secure and enjoyable places to unwind for people who are normally uncomfortable in bars.

Inside Shippo

Shippo describes itself as a “mix bar” welcoming all kinds of people. Women, as well as men, transgender, and non-binary folks, are all welcome. Guests are even encouraged to come alone, though men must be accompanied by a woman to enter. However, it is first and foremost a bar for lesbians, and one of the few of its kind in Osaka.

The vibe is very relaxed and cozy. There is soft blue lighting behind the bar and sultry images of Marilyn Monroe on the wall.

Plush seating is available both at the bar and at more private tables. This isn’t a party spot where guests shake it all night on the dance floor. Shippo is perfect for people to get to know each other in a space where they can actually hear what each other are saying. This is why it’s so popular among those who are shy and/or new to the scene.

Once a month, Shippo hosts an “Ofukai” or “Off Party” for women and people transitioning from female to male only. Every other night, anyone is welcome.
