The Kunenan Mansion is unique in that it remains closed for the majority of the year. In fact, it only opens its doors for nine days during the peak of autumn foliage, so you’ll need to monitor the local media for updates. It’s also open during spring, where you can see the mansion covered in beautiful shades of green.

Mifuneyama
A designated place of natural beauty that spans 68,000 square meters, Kunenan was put together over a period of nine years from 1900 under the Zen priest, Hotori. When translated, Kunenan Mansion means “nine-year house.” Yataro Itami, an important businessman from Saga, built the attached house in 1892 as a place to escape the stress of salaryman life.

Demonstrating the shakkei method, meaning borrowed scenery, the garden is landscaped to resemble the universal harmony in nature. The Chikushi Plains act as the garden’s contemplative yet breathtaking backdrop.
