Kuroshima
The "heart" of Okinawa.
Kuroshima is the perfect tropical island to get away from the hustle and bustle of tourists on mainland Okinawa or more popular tourist spots like the Okinawan isle of Ishigaki. With miles of untouched sand, this is the perfect beach island to relax in.
Okinawa
With only 10 square kilometers, the island is small enough to get around with ease but large enough to get lost in. A long stretch of sand is located on the western side of the island and thanks to the curve of the island, you will be sure to find a private spot just for yourself.
The island is also home to one of the largest coral reefs in Japan, with some of the rarest species to be found. Due to the lack of crowds, snorkeling in the waters around the island is a must. You’ll find the island’s charms come with it’s remote feel and ability to discover serene spots like Iko Pier (pictured above.)
Before you go
There are not many shops or restaurants on the island. Buy snacks and essentials in the shops around Ishigaki Port and take it with you to Kuroshima. The best way to get around the island is by bicycle. There are not many cars around the island making the bike ride very safe. Bikes can be rented at the ferry terminal on Kuroshima for around ¥1,000 for one day, and the rental place closes just before the final ferry back to Ishigaki.
The ferries between Ishigaki Port and Kuroshima are sporadic and the frequency is dependent on the season. Please visit Ishigaki Ferry Terminal for up-to-date information on ferry schedules.
