Lucky Pierrot
Only in Hakodate: Local burger chain serves up zany, cheap and tasty fast food. Try the Chinese Chicken Burger!
Lucky Pierrot is not your ordinary fast food chain. They serve themed burgers that are out of this world.
Furthermore, every one of their shops also has a fun (and even strange) interior. But you won’t find Lucky Pierrot restaurants outside of Hakodate, Hokkaido Prefecture. Their management would like to keep it that way.
Lucky Pierrot is a local Hakodate stalwart, and they have 17 restaurants in and around Hakodate. Lucky Pierrot is best known for their juicy burgers, their most famous being the “Chinese Chicken Burger.” This burger contains their signature fried chicken that’s prepared in a sweet and tangy sauce.
They’ve got plenty of other burger choices, including the Lucky Egg Burger (No. 2 best seller), the Pork Cutlet Burger (No. 3 best seller), the Lucky Cheeseburger (No. 4 best seller), the Genghis Khan burger (lamb meat), the Shrimp Mayo Burger…the list goes on and on.
The burgers are reasonably priced, too, starting at ¥270 for the basic hamburger. The Chinese Chicken Burger is ¥330. If you’re up to it, you can even try to eat one of their massive tower burgers. One tower burger is even modeled after local landmark Goryokaku Tower.
Beyond burgers, their menu is huge and has something for everyone. They’ve even got Japanese-style curry branded as “Milk Curry.” Quite frankly, the milk is difficult to taste, but the curry is still darn good. Their best seller in the curry department is one with the same “Chinese Chicken.” Also on the menu is hamburg steak, omurice (omelette with rice inside), donburi, spaghetti, french fries, ice cream and more.
“Pierrot” means “clown” in French — hence their clown logo.
But Lucky Pierrot’s interior doesn’t really feel like they’re going for the circus theme. Instead, it has gaudy and over-the-top religious decorations, including angels complete with halos. It’s all quite strange and doesn’t make much sense. But that’s probably the whole point. It’s a lot of fun.
If you’re seeking tasty and fun fast food in a unique setting, make sure to check out Hakodate’s pride and joy, Lucky Pierrot.
