Unko Museum Odaiba

The poop on Tokyo's permanent poo museum.

It may sound strange on (toilet) paper, but Tokyo’s poop museum is one of the city’s most trendy attractions.

The poos here at the Unko Museum Odaiba — unko is Japanese for poop — are fortunately nothing like the real thing. Unless your poop resembles pastel-colored soft-serve ice cream, in which case you should stop reading now and see a doctor.

From Yokohama’s temporary poop museum

In March 2019, the announcement of a short run pop-up gallery dedicated to all things unko in Yokohama made headlines across the globe.

After six months of immense poop-ularity, the team behind this bizarre but intriguing destination opened a permanent home in Tokyo. It joins the ranks of many highly-instagrammable spots in Odaiba, Tokyo’s hip entertainment neighborhood.

The museum is located on the second floor of the DiverCity Tokyo Plaza shopping complex, one of Odaiba’s most well-trodden tourist hot spots.

Installations, displays, and immersive attractions in the museum are all based around the theme “Max Unko Kawaii,” which translates to “the maximum cuteness of poop.”

Test your un-telligence

The museum’s exhibits are separated by zones with unko-pun names: un-teractive, un-stagenic and un-telligence. Chase projected images of poop or try your luck at retro-inspired games in the un-teractive zone.

Un-stagenic is a poop-themed photo shooting gallery where guests can snap crappy selfies with surreal flying poop and shiny poop props.

Un-telligence is for those who want to dig deep into the world of bowel movements, while also admiring illustrations of poop drawn by celebrities. Don’t try and find the logic in it, this is a poop museum we’re talking about here.

There’s the “Kusogame Center” which translates to the “Shit-game Center,” and a room dedicated to Unberuto, the museum’s anthropomorphic mascot who is a philosopher that poops out other living poops. Yes, it’s exactly as outrageous as it sounds.

Your final stop is the “Unko Factory,” which is a gift store that’s way more attractive than it sounds. Be sure to pick up some shiny new turds for your friends and family, no polishing required.
